At the beginning of the year, B&A Stone Supplies were met with a huge opportunity to work with one of the most well-known engineering & development companies on what would become our largest project to date. In February 2022, J. Murphy & Sons Limited came to us with one question in mind: could we supply large volumes of materials continuously throughout the day, every day for the next few months and we were pleased to respond with confidence, yes!
The Project
In summary, this project required around 125,000 tonnes of mainly 6F5 to be delivered to Hickley Sub Station, Crooks Marsh in Avonmouth which is a huge amount of aggregate to provide on a single project.
At our first meeting, we produced a detailed plan for the completion of this contract and identified how we could best service this project. It was vital that we gained an understanding of exactly what was required to enable us to fulfil this contract to the best possible standard whilst minimising risk not only of delay/supply issues but to also maintain our high standards of health & safety.
Phase 1 - In Progress
Supply 30,000 tonnes of mainly 6F5 to site between January & March.
Phase 2 - Now Confirmed
Supply 95,000 tonnes of mainly 6F5 to site between March & November.
Challenges & Solutions
The biggest challenge for our team was understanding how important the timings of delivery were for this project. Without a continuous supply of materials throughout the day, everyday the whole site would come to a standstill. We’re proud to say that our genuine understanding of this requirement was what sparked the attention of our client.
Over the past 5 months or so, B&A Group has managed to supply 800 tonnes of 6F5 per day. We’ve gone above and beyond to ensure we are being proactive with communications and ensuring that the material required is being delivered on site exactly when they need it with dedicated vehicles to maintain a constant supply.
With such a huge project to service, another key challenge was the actual number of vehicles and people required to deliver the materials needed and so we have also been pleased to secure work for a number of reliable subcontractors with reliable work over a number of months which we know can be hard to come by!
We’ve also been pleased to see our ejector lorry in action on site, it’s been the perfect machine for this project and has helped improve efficiency.
Added Value
Following the huge success from Phase 1 of this project, B&A Group has recently secured Phase 2 which started at the beginning of March 2022.
Through our extensive knowledge and expertise gained from other projects, our team have been able to identify obstacles quickly to propose and implement solutions which minimise impact on the project as a whole.
