Lockleaze, Bristol

Lockleaze case study

Transforming a derelict, overgrown site subject to years of fly-tipping and misuse into an engineered and enabled site ready for a sustainable community development, incorporating shared facilities and a wildlife corridor. 

Works delivered by B&A included land remediation, removal of asbestos and hazardous material, soil analysis and classification, extensive earthworks, muck away, aggregate supply, placement and compaction, and road construction.

Mountpark Bristol XL

Mountpark B&A Group project

Helping to create a 60-acre industrial / logistics development site at Avonmouth with planning consent for up to 1.3 million ft2. B&A’s role included importation of 200,000m3 of suitable subsoil under an EA Bespoke Recovery Permit to raise the land above the flood risk. 

Controlling over 50,000 vehicle movements, we diverted 340,000 tonnes of material from landfill.

Collaborating closely with residents on garden extension projects, we supplied expert assistance in a highly congested and time restricted site. 

Constrained by a nearby school and the need to keep roads open through the day, we managed three loads per day to remove 300m3 of soil.

Mead Fields

B&A Group project

Extensive earthworks and land preparation across a 38-hectare, multi-purpose community development. B&A imported 250,000m3 of topsoil and 47,000 tonnes of 6F5, as well as carrying out 200,000m3 of internal soil movements. 

Works included surcharging to compress water out of underlying peat, cut & fill, settlement monitoring and a noise defence bund adjacent to the M5.

Hillside Gardens

B&A Group project

B&A provided a high quality, sustainable landscaping solution for new, multi-sports pitch facilities. Led by our CL:AIRE accredited Qualified Persons, we imported 60,000m3 of subsoil to create an acoustic bund to screen the M32 from the new facility. 

Landscaping of the bunds will be enhanced through planting a mix of native woodland, scrub and grassland providing both a visual improvement and important ecological habitat.

Central Park, Severnside

B&A Group has work closely with Severnside since 2010 to deliver land raise development platforms near the Severn Estuary, creating facilities for Amazon, DHL, The Range, Farm Foods, Davies Turner and CHEP Pallets. 

This includes operating a Bespoke Recovery Permit for the importation of subsoil to raise development platforms above flood risk levels.

Westgate project

B&A carried out land raising works to overcome flood risk and develop former agricultural land for commercial and residential end-use. 

Appointed as PC, we imported 1.3 million m3 of subsoil under a Bespoke Recovery Permit, as well as installing and monitoring all environmental controls, measurement systems and material tracking.

Beggar's Bush - Bristol Bears

Beggar's Bush project

B&A delivered successive projects for Bristol Bears Rugby to convert Kingcott Farmland into sports grounds. The importation of 115,000m3 of suitable material was granted an Environmental Recovery Permit, which saw the construction of four pitches in a stepped design. 

To construct the works, temporary haul routes were installed and then removed on completion.

Southmead project

B&A carried out remediation works at the former Dumail Road school site in Southmead, Bristol. Visible asbestos containing materials were identified during site investigation works, which led to the development of a detailed remediation strategy for this brownfield site.

M4 Balfour Beatty Central Reservations Works

B&A Group at work

B&A worked closely with Balfour Beatty on the Central Reservation Works between Junction 19 to 20 as part of the £848 million upgrade to the M4. The works completed include classification and relocation of the soils and hardcore from within the central reservation to suitable permitted locations. 

An initial overnight assessment underpinned our fully tailored plan for efficient materials movement, regularly updated throughout.

Viridor Energy Recovery Facility

Viridor Energy Recovery Facility

B&A supplied 200,000 tonnes of recycled aggregate across three years, as part of the £252 million development of a new Energy Recovery Plant in Avonmouth. 

Every day we ran a significant number of loads both in and out between the site and our nearby recycled aggregate facility. We ensured consistent material and transport availability to continually match forecast volumes.
