Sustainable re-use of Materials

To reduce the impact of the motorway, it was proposed to create an acoustic landscape bund on the boundary of the site.

Bristol & Avon Group imported approximately 60,000m3 of clean subsoil to create a landscape bund to screen the M32 from the Sports Facility using the CL:AIRE DoWCoP .

Challenges & Solutions

The sports facility was in daily use by the university and other clubs.

The project was therefore completed in two phases to minimise disruption to the sports facility during term times:

  • Phase 1 August 2019 – October 2019
  • Phase 2 May 2021 – September 2021

The entrance to the site was on a busy cycle route so enhanced wheel washing was in place to ensure no debris was left on the road leaving site.

The roads leading up to the site also had a number of HGV restrictions, which meant careful traffic management was required, including using GPS tracking of vehicles, to minimise bottlenecks in and around the site.

Added Value

Landscaping of the bunds will be enhanced through planting a mix of native woodland, scrub and grassland providing both a visual improvement and important ecological habitat.

Through experience gained on other similar projects, solutions to problems were proposed and implemented to minimise the impact on the project.
