B&A From 1993 to 2022

27/05/2022
B&A LORRIES

Following the launch of our new website, we’ve taken some time to reflect on the past and celebrate how far we’ve come! Over the past few years, we have added new divisions to our expanding range of services including B&A Stone Supplies, B&A Land Regeneration & Balla Estates. With the addition of these exciting new opportunities, there is no doubt that B&A Group will be able to support even more exciting projects in the years to come.

Where it all started

B&A Group has been established for 30 years. Originally founded in 1993 by the late Jimmy Berkely, we’re proud to say that the company is still managed by the Berkely family today.

Jimmy emigrated from Ireland to England at the age of 15 and followed many Irish immigrants at the time who began working in haulage to support themselves and their families. He bought his first tipper lorry in 1968 when he also moved to Bristol to start up his own haulage company, focusing mainly on muck away and groundwork services in the local area. During the 1980’s the business started to excel and he was involved in a number of large projects, including the construction of the Spectrum Building & The Swallow Royal Hotel in the city centre as well as the development of small towns, Thornbury and Yate.

Following his success, Jimmy founded Bristol & Avon Transport & Skip Hire Ltd in 1993. It wasn’t long before the company fleet and team expanded to keep up with demand. Throughout the 1990s, we were involved in the remodelling of the Bristol City Centre, development of Bradley Stoke and also the approach roads which led to the second Severn Crossing.

What we’ve accomplished over the years

It’s fair to say that we have excelled in our abilities over the years, and we’ve been honoured to play a key role in the regeneration of Bristol and the surrounding area.

Accreditations

As a leading figure in the industry, we have made it our mission to adhere to strict standards around health & safety, procurement and our impact on the environment.

One of our most valued certifications is the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) accreditation. This is a particularly strict collection of standards and best practices for businesses to adhere to, covering a wide variety of operations including storage, procurement, environmental policies and more. We currently hold two ISO accreditations: ISO 14001 which relates to Environmental Management Systems and ISO 9001 which relates to Quality Management Systems.

Some of our other achievements include receiving our Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) accreditation and becoming a CL:AIRE Principal Member. By holding accreditations like these, we show our commitment to becoming the very best in the industry in terms of our standard of work and how much we value the people that we work with. You can find a more in-depth summary of our accreditations, here.

Monumental projects

Mountpark Bristol Development

This project has been by far, one of the most rewarding in terms of sustainability. Our work and support for the Mountpark Bristol Development meant that over 340,000 tonnes of material had been diverted from landfill and saved the equivalent raw material, conserving a natural resource. We were also able to develop five large attenuation ponds and four newt ponds which will provide a valuable wildlife habitat which will surround the development.

Mead Realisations, Taylor Wimpey and Bellway

B&A Group has worked with two national homebuilders Taylor Wimpey Plc & Bellway Plc and the principal land-owner and developer Mead Realisations Ltd at this expansive 38-hectare development site.

For four years B&A has been undertaking work at this development for the vast enabling works needed. Services provided include subsoil importation for flood protection and ground improvement, pile mat installation, noise bund construction and archaeological ground preparation. Community & charity are close to our hearts

We’ve always taken great pride in being able to support local charities and make a difference to those who need it most. Supporting charities will always be a primary goal for B&A Group as we continue to grow as an established business in the South West.

We also strive to offer support to local communities & projects wherever we can so that they can continue to provide fun and crucial outlets for children and adults in the community.

Meningitis Now

Having a personal connection to the charity and Meningitis Now founder, Steve Dayman MBE, we are currently on a mission to raise £100,000 to help this incredible charity reach their goal in eradicating all strains of the meningitis virus. So far, the charity has invested over £12 million in early stage research which has led to the introduction of five life-saving vaccines.

This year, we will be involved in a number of fundraising events including The Three Peaks Challenge and the London Marathon. If you’d like to support us, or see our progress to achieving our goal then please visit our Meningitis Now pledge page.

What does the future hold for B&A Group?

We’ve already come so far, since the company launched in 1993 and we’re excited for what the future holds! We are now part way through our growth strategy and have made great headway in promoting the synergies between the three divisions of Transport & Recycling, Stone Supplies & Land Regeneration.

We will continue to place the Health, Safety and well being of our work force at the centre of our decision making, invest in up to date technologies that can offer greater cost savings to our customers and remain resolute in our commitment to being an efficient and sustainable leader in our field.

Be sure to follow us on our social channels to keep up to date with all of our upcoming projects and developments!

New Website

One of our most recently completed projects was the launch of our brand new website which we were pleased to push live last week!

Having gone through so much growth over the years and with the development of our wider structure, we felt that our website really needed to represent how far we have come. We’re always looking to expand our service offering, add to our expert team and keep up with the forever changing environment so it seemed only right to develop a new website too.

We hope you love it as much as we do, let us know your thoughts!
