B&A Welcomes Work Experience Student Gina Cox
Here at Bristol & Avon, it is important for us to work alongside and offer support to the local community wherever we can. Whether it is a local group, a team or an individual we are keen to help them achieve all they’re capable of. With that in mind, we were delighted to welcome a local student, Gina Cox, for work experience at our headquarters. Work experience placements are set up to help introduce students to the world of work, building their confidence and encouraging them to try new things.
Gina, aged 16, attends Kingsweston School and the Oasis Academy outreach program near Shirehampton. She has recently completed Year 10 and is undertaking Entry Level 3 and her GCSE qualifications.
Gina spent the mornings with B&A, before heading back to school for lunch and afternoon commitments. Unfortunately, Gina was not with us for as long as we would have wished. Marketing Manager Clare Raby said, ‘She was really lovely, we all liked her immensely’.
During her time at B&A, Gina helped with a wide variety of tasks across the different departments. She spent time working on sub-contractor insurance dates with Clare Raby and assisted in the setup of our Meningitis Now fundraising Wimbledon pop-up cafe. She also supported Nicki Hawking in accounting and helped Debbie Jordan with filing.
To thank Gina for her hard work we gave her a B&A goodie bag, featuring amongst other items our black B&A staff hoodie. On being asked if she enjoyed the experience Gina just grinned.
Following the success of this placement, Kings Weston School has confirmed that they would definitely send more students to B&A.
Following the placement, B&A received a letter from Gina:
Dear Clare and the employees at B&A,
It has been a pleasure doing work experience at Bristol & Avon Transport and Recycling. Personally, I really enjoyed being there once I knew what it was going to be like and what jobs you wanted me to do.
I would especially like to thank you for making my first work experience a really positive one. You made me feel welcome and confident.
Thanks so much for the bag full of goodies. It was so kind of you.
We also asked Gina about what she felt she gained from her experience.
Confidence. I was really worried about going and once I was there, I realized that I could do it. In fact, I might like a job like this as long as I know what I am doing. It was also quite quiet there and the people were really friendly. That helped a lot and to also meet Clare first and ask her questions. Also, being able to visit before starting work experience really helped. It was great. I want to do it again!
The team at B&A have loved having Gina with us. She was a big help and we are thrilled that she enjoyed the experience. We wish her a wonderful summer and all the best with completing her GCSEs next year.
