Smiths (Gloucester) Ltd acquires Bristol & Avon Waste Management
The B&A Group are delighted to announce that its Bristol & Avon Waste Management division has been acquired by Smith’s (Gloucester) Ltd. – A family-run business based in the South West..
The 19th January 2019 marked the official takeover of B&A Group’s Waste Management Division by Smith’s (Gloucester) Ltd., with the operation and assets being transferred to the new owners.
This included Bristol & Avon Waste Management’s skips, RORO hire and recycling services; together with its dedicated management and operations team, drivers and yard staff, who are now directly employed under Smith’s (Gloucester) Ltd.
Smiths are a well-established, waste management firm with over 35 years of experience in the sector. The family-owned company embodies a community culture, which rewards hard work from staff who are continuing to deliver excellent customer service on small and large-scale projects.
Speaking of the acquisition, Aidan Berkely, a director of the B&A Group’s ultimate holding company, said: “Last year, we were approached by Smiths who wanted a turnkey site to expand their waste management business on a larger scale in the Bristol area.”
“After much consideration, we decided to sell Bristol & Avon Waste Management to Smiths who I think can take the company to the next level, building on the success we have already achieved in the area.”
“Whilst we have enjoyed 17 years of profitable trading in Bristol and the surrounding areas with the skips and RORO’s, we are proud to handover Bristol & Avon Waste Management, to another well-established and successful family-owned business, allowing me to focus on developing other subsidiaries of the B&A Group.”
Aidan Berkely added: “I would personally like to thank all of our customers for their help and support in making the company the success it is today. We would not have been able to do this without you.”
“Likewise, the company prided itself on excellent service, which was upheld with our great team of driving and yard staff and of course the transport management team, including Ian Reay, Zach Hepburn, Chris Rowles and Deb Daly. It’s been a pleasure working with you all and I wish you all the very best for the future with Smiths.”
Bristol & Avon Transport & Recycling Ltd, providing Grab Hire, Muck away, Tippers, Aggregates, Soil and Land Remediation and Environmental consultancy remains unaffected by the recent acquisition and will continue its operations as normal.
This purchase marks a company milestone in B&A Group’s history. This enables us to concentrate on the growth and development of Bristol & Avon Transport & Recycling Ltd, which continues to provide an award winning and comprehensive service in the South West of England.
Last year, Bristol & Avon Transport & Recycling Ltd was named as one of London Stock Exchange Group’s 1000 Companies to Inspire Britain. The report is a celebration of the UK’s fastest-growing and most dynamic SME’s across the country. To be included on the list, companies need to show consistent revenue growth for at least three years, outperforming others in the sector.
To spearhead company growth, the B&A Group invested £7 million in developing an aggregates recycling facility and state of the art and unique Head Office & Workshop at Hallen, Bristol.
Clare Berkely, Finance Director at B&A Group, said: “There are many contributing factors to our success; with a high retention of employees, we now have an excellent team of experienced, skilled and specialist professionals at B&A Group, offering a range of services to a large & varied customer base.”
“In addition, the location of our HQ, where we have now centralised most of our activities, has brought about many benefits enjoyed by our customers, sub-contractors and company as a whole. This has allowed the company to provide a competitive edge on pricing without compromising our high standards of reliability and capability to respond quickly and professionally to our customers’ needs.”
Whilst we say goodbye to Bristol & Avon Waste Management, that has also enjoyed much success over the years, we felt the time was right to sell when the opportunity presented itself. Saying goodbye to the loyal and committed workforce was difficult, however, we are proud to hand over a successful, profitable business to a company like Smith’s (Gloucester) Ltd that share many of the same values as B&A Group.
A spokesperson from Smith’s (Gloucester) Ltd said: “Smiths are excited by this new venture and the opportunities that it brings. We look forward to continuing good relationships with the staff and customers whilst being able to offer them additional services including Trade Waste collections.”
The new buyers will build on the B&A Group’s excellent work over the years, from the same established site in Ironchurch Road, Avonmouth, Bristol.
