Staff Profile: Ben Higham
Ben Higham started his career with B&A Group nearly six years ago, after securing his initial position as an Environmental Technician.
Since then, he has become one of our key personnel helping B&A Group deliver on its customer promises, particularly with brownfield construction sites; ensuring waste assessments are carried out successfully and running projects to schedule.
Prior to his post, Ben studied at University of Bristol where he attained a MSci (Hons) Masters in Chemistry, which equipped him with the transferrable skills for employment and an obvious strong knowledge base for contaminant analysis.
His on the job training includes HazWasteOnline, WAMITAB Level 4 Waste and Resource Management (currently undertaking High Risk Operator Competence for Managing Physical and Chemical Treatment of Hazardous Waste) CL:AIRE – Transfer of Materials and application of Category 4 Screening Levels. Ben is also working towards his chartership in Waste Management.
Some of his duties include liaising with developers and helping clients budget costs for brownfield sites. Additionally, he now project manages asbestos remediation as well as more traditional bulk earthworks contracts. Liaising with B&A Group’s transport management is a daily undertaking, to make sure both in-house managed and clients’ projects duly collect, haul and transfer waste and material from the site in question to schedule.
Over the last six years, Ben has acquired a number of responsibilities; progressing from a technical sales role into a project/senior management position, where he is responsible for overseeing the correct interpretation (and specific consultation when required) of site investigation reports. These typically form the first part of both the duty-of-care process and commercial implications of waste removal. The last step of the duty-of-care procedure is to provide all parties with the correct paperwork.
“There is no black and white area with contaminated land as soil conditions vary depending on each site,” Ben remarked. “The key is to help clients and show them what they’re up against,” he said, adding, “It’s important to breakdown and explain the recommendations we have made for our customers, after collecting the relevant tests and laboratory data, so they have a better understanding of how we got to that point and price for the job,” highlighting that all assignments must comply with current legislation and the regulators.
Working alongside Sales Manager, Ashley Bruno, both employees are tasked with pricing client projects accordingly and optimising what waste materials can and cannot be accepted at B&A Group’s facilities. Knowing the next best outlets and working with these third party sites is a key factor to operating in this industry and delivering a turn-key waste removal package.
Explaining what he enjoys most about his job, Ben said: “I love how dynamic my role is working through projects from being out on the road and looking for materials to speaking with many different people such as, directors, land owners and site managers.” He added. “It’s about providing an excellent service and building relationships with clients by being responsible, reliable and delivering results in line with their vision.”
